Formaldehyde is a colourless irritant gas. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) lists it as a Group 1 carcinogen. The WHO indoor guideline is 0.1 mg/m³ averaged over 30 minutes.
That is not meant to scare you. It is why the board grade should be written on the quotation, not left as a vague “eco” claim.
Where It Comes From in a New Home
In a newly renovated flat, formaldehyde often comes from the resin glue in particle board, MDF and plywood, plus paint, flooring and soft furnishings. Heat and humidity speed its release, and Singapore is hot and humid all year.
Cabinets stay sealed into the home for years. That is why we make E0 the standard on every carcass, not an upgrade you have to ask for.
Common Emission Grades
Lower numbers mean a lower allowed formaldehyde release. Different standards use different tests, so do not mix the units.
E0 Is Not a No-Formaldehyde Board
Wood itself gives off a trace of formaldehyde, so any claim that a board has no formaldehyde is inaccurate. E0 means ultra-low formaldehyde: at most 0.5 mg/L. Japan F★★★★ and China ENF are stricter. E0 is not the highest grade.
We state the limit in writing instead of dressing the grade up.
How to Check a Carpenter's Board
The grade, in writing, on the quote
The written quotation should name the board grade, for example E0. “Eco board” in conversation is not enough.
Grade label or supplier test certificate
Ask for the grade label on the panels, or the supplier’s test certificate. We use BestPly E0 and can explain the source.
Before You Move In
After the cabinets go in, ventilate for a few weeks: open windows, run fans, open cabinet doors. Do not mask the smell with fragrance. A professional air test is optional, not required for every home.
